Annotation: The article deals with the passenger transportation special aspects on the inland waterways of the Russian Federation; their role and significance are assessed considering historical experience. The need for integration of water transport into multimodal passenger routes at a new technological level is substantiated on the basis of a system approach that would improve the quality of transport services available to the population, promoting development of adjacent territories, reduction of species competition and decrease of negative impact on the environment
